ARA began as a grassroots movement of dedicated volunteers who refused to stand by and watch refugees in desperate need. In June 1975, a group of concerned people met in Adelaide to plan a community response to the thousands of people fleeing war and oppression in the Indo-China region. By November, the non-political, non-sectarian Indo-China Refugee Association (ICRA) was officially incorporated.
ICRA challenged the Australian Government’s stance, promoted the intake of refugees, and provided welfare to Indo-Chinese refugees in both Australian and overseas camps and critical resettlement services.
Over the years this caring group of people achieved remarkable outcomes welcoming and supporting refugees and helping find accommodation and employment. Their success set a national precedent and led the way to compassionate alliances across Australia.
This is the foundation of what is now our Australian Refugee Association.
